Nearly everyone would love to have a home based business. No bosses. No commuting. No strict schedules to keep. Just fire up your computer, pop up a website and the money will start rolling in, right?

Well, it ain't quite that easy!

You must have something to sell that others want. It must have great value. You must be trusted. And you need to find a way to get those potential customers to your website.

Our biggest caveat right upfront? Don't quit your day job!

There are tons of get-rich-quick schemes available on the Internet that sound wonderful, but they are just that - schemes. As the old saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it is!"

If any offer promises to make you millions overnight, believe us, it isn't going to happen. These offers are designed to do one thing and one thing only - move the money from your pocket to the one making the offer.

If you truly want to try your hand at starting a home based business, start small, do it during your off-time from work and expect to lose any money you put into it!

Yes, that is right - expect to lose any money you put into your home based business. Don't spend anything you cannot afford to lose. That way, if the business does work out well for you, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We have tried many home based businesses (we use that term loosely) and have lost our share of money on them. Make absolute sure you steer clear of any scheme that promises payment to you only for bringing others into the fold. These are called pyramid schemes and they always collapse, leaving you and/or your friends holding the bag (i.e., spending more than you receive). Always!

So, how should you start a home based business?

Select a well established company - one that has been around for years, not the new kid on the block. When you receive that email telling you this is the greatest, newest, surest, most wonderful money-maker in the world, click that delete button as fast as you can. Your chances of making money with this company are probably much worse than your chances of winning the lottery!

Choose a company that has real goods or services to offer at reasonable prices, not atrociously marked up products that no one really wants anyway. If you have to buy or sell a certain amount of the product every month to earn your commissions, be very cautious. Soon your garage will be full of garbage you don't want or need - and can't sell!

Our best advise is to start out with an Affiliate Program. Typically it will cost you nothing to sign up for a company's affiliate program. You advertise their products or services and get paid when you make a sale for them. Of course, to honestly advertise and sell any product, you should use it yourself - but that should be your only outright cost (other than your advertising costs). After all, if you don't use the product or service, how can you recommend it to others?
